Mitate (Parody) of Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove
The “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” was a popular subject matter in Japanese painting. These hermit-sages of ancient China gathered in a bamboo grove to engage in cultured pursuits. In this print, the artist Harunobu creates a playful variation of this subject matter by replacing the sages with seven Japanese women contesting their beauty.(20160830_h10-2)
