This work portrays Maria Billaut, with whom Kuroda had an affair during his stay at Grez-sur-Loing. As recommended by his teacher, Raphaël Collin, Kuroda submitted this painting to the Salon exhibition organized by the French Artists’ Association (Société des artistes français).
