Soba cups were used for many different purposes, ranging from dipping soba (buckwheat noodle), and placing side dishes to drinking tea or sake.These cups were carefully kept in storerooms except when brought out for special occasions, such as for festivals and weddings. It is said that these cups began to be called "soba cups" when eating soba became popular and soba shops started to use them in quantity.
