Yuhoen Garden

Yuhoen Garden

By Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924)

1923 (Taisho 12)

Oil on wood panel

“Yuhoen,” the name of Kuroda's garden at his residence in Azabu Kogaicho, was given by his foster father, Kiyotsuna. The calligraphy on the back of this work reads “Yuhoen, the year of Taisho 12 (1923)” in Chinese characters. Kuroda moved to Azabu Kogaicho from Hirakawacho in July of 1923 and suffered from a heart attack at the end of the year. This was his last finished work.
