Landscape of Honmoku, Yokohama

Landscape of Honmoku, Yokohama

By Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924)

Dated 1894 (Meiji 27)

Oil on wood panel

Kuroda stayed in Kamakura and Honmoku Beach in Yokohama in the summer of 1894, partly as an escape from the hot weather. At Honmoku Beach, he stayed at the Getsumeikan Inn and created depictions of the surrounding seascape. This work is one such example, with a rocky outcropping covered in trees and white clouds in a summer sky executed confidently with powerful brushstrokes.
