The date May 10, 1897 is written on the bottom left of the painting. Having been appointed as instructor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and having founded the artists’ group Hakubakai the previous year, Kuroda became extremely busy with receiving guests, attending meetings, and running errands. Created during this busy period in his life, this work, although small, was executed with accurate brushwork and is imbued with a delicate feel.
