Spring Rain

Spring Rain

Paintings / Taisho

By Shimomura Kanzan (1873-1930)

Dated 1916 (Taisho 5)

Color on silk

Within this bold composition, in which the railings of the bridge cut across the center, delicate brushstrokes are used to portray a small drama in which a group of three women look back at another. Gold leaf and pigment were applied to the back of the silk canvas (they show through the weave of the silk) in order to suggest the rain through the depiction of light rather than through the use of line.(160412_h18)
