The early style of cosmetic stand which originated among the aristocracy in the Muromachi period was a small chest with drawers for toilet articles and a mirror rack on top. A cosmetic stand decorated with beautiful makie on black lacquer constituted one of the pieces furniture making up a bride's outfit, and this style continues into the Edo period.
