This illustrated legend depicts the origin of Byodoji temple (Inabado, in Kyoto) and its main idol statue Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajya Buddha). In the sea off Inaba (present-day eastern Tottori prefecture), Tachibana no Yukihira salvaged a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, which later flew after Yukihira to Kyoto. The statue was housed in a temple, and this became Inabado. This work is presumed to be the oldest extant example of illustrated legend scrolls.(20130325_h031)
