In China, phoenixes have been known as auspicious creatures, which were said to live in paulownia trees. In Japan as well, the combination of phoenix and paulownia tree has been favored as a lucky design. This hanging scroll applies yuzen dyeing techniques for the design to resemble a painting. The yuzen technique is used for the entire work including the mounting parts. In the late Edo period, Buddhist paintings as well as flower-and-bird paintings were also produced by yuzen dyeing.(20110102_h102)
